African Americans of Chattanooga

Hi Everybody,
Well, if you didn’t know at first…now you do: this is absolutely my FAVORITE book. I didn’t write this one as a writer-for-hire project; I wrote it because Black History is close to my heart. My mentor, Bishop W.C. Hunter had just purchased an historical building — the old Walden Hospital, built and managed by Chattanooga’s first and only African American female physician for 35 years. It was his suggestion that I dig into Chattanooga’s African American history and bring it to book form. It took over six years, and he encouraged me every step of the way.

His suggestion launched my writing career. As I researched Chattanooga’s history, I uncovered so many amazing stories that I just had to make books out of them. Now I have two historical children’s picture books that will debut over the next 18 months. The first, called HAMMERING FOR FREEDOM: THE STORY OF WILLIAM LEWIS, debuts in June, 2018. The second is called THE OLDEST STUDENT: HOW MARY WALKER LEARNED TO READ. The release date has not been published.

Bishop Hunter passed away on December 11, 2016 and it makes me sad that he will not see the debut of these two books. However, I will never forget the part he played and I will always be grateful for his suggestion.
