It’s Universal
Hi Everybody,
Stopping thru before I call it a night to bring you this very deep universal revelation. That’s right, it’s a message from the universe, and you might want to put on your listening ears. Here goes:
“A Man Said to The Universe”
By Stephen Crane
A man said to the universe:
“Sir, I exist!”
“However,” replied the universe,
“The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.”
No, my friend, it hasn’t.
The universe is not obligated to you. It’s not obligated to me, either. It’s also not obligated to the dog, the feral cat in the tool shed, or the wild mushrooms struggling to stay alive by feeding off the rotting tree stump. Ergo, we’re not entitled.
You want to be discovered? It won’t be handed to you. You’ll have to rise early, put on your thinking cap, sit down, pick up your pencil, rack you brain, write, remember to show instead of tell, read your work aloud, edit (not spell-check), rewrite, re-read, re-edit, take your critique partner’s criticism, start again, re-write, submit, pray, wipe your rejection tears, re-write, re-edit, re-submit, distract yourself while you wait, help some wayward newbie writer find the path, start new projects, and go about your life while you wait to reap the fruits of your writing labor.
But if you do these things, you will eventually reap, because there is a universal principal at work here: You reap what you sow.
So whatever you do, don’t just sit there and daydream about being a writer.
Get to work.
Happy New Year
