Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!
Hi Everybody,
Back with another review for another wonderful book. Odds are you’ve heard about it, but the odds are even better that if you haven’t read it yet, you’ll love, love, love it. The book is called, Liar, and it’s a nail-biter if ever there was one. Come on, let me tell you all about it!
First off, do know any liars? Would you love to catch a liar in one of their stinking lies, then call them on it? If you could meet one, wouldn’t you rather skip the wannabe’s and meet the biggest liar of them all? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I have the book for you.
Liar, by Justine Larbalestier, is the brilliantly-written, darkly-disturbing story of an unpopular, unattractive, pathetically antisocial teenager named Micah who has a dream boyfriend named Zach who can never, ever be seen with her in public.
When Micah isn’t on a secret rendezvous with Zach, she spends her time telling the most humongous lies you ever heard. But when Zach turns up dead under shocking circumstances, Micah decides it’s finally time to set the lies straight.
To do this, she must back-track over her life. She takes the reader on a hair-raising, cookie-tossing roller-coaster ride of weird explanations and sordid descriptions, spinning tales about everything from being covered with fur and bonding with dogs, to werewolves, dead brothers, and terrified parents.
Micah tells lie after lie…then politely takes them all back. She lies so much and so often, it’s a wonder her tongue doesn’t fall out of her head! You never know what to believe with this girl, but the one thing you do know for sure is, she certainly isn’t normal. Not by a longshot.
Larbalestier’s story-telling ability shines like the top of the Chrysler Building in this one. It’s definitely full of nail-biting fun, but I discovered something even more unique than the plot: I discovered that this sinister tale features an African American in the lead roll.
Yes, my friends, Micah Wilkins is African American; bi-racial, to be exact. Dark though it is, her story is refreshing because her character is not bound by the energy-draining stereotypes we often see with multicultural heroes. She’s not dirt-poor (at least no poorer than anyone else in the story), she doesn’t live in a drug-infested, crime-ravaged ghetto, and she’s not educationally bankrupt. She’s just a big, fat, bald-headed liar…and perhaps something more; something terrifyingly, hideously more–but you’ll have to read this gripping tale and decide that for yourself.
I love it, love it, love it!
You can’t–I repeat, CAN’T miss this one. Hurry over to your local bookstore and grab a copy before they’re all gone. Then sit yourself down, stuff your fingers in your mouth, and prepare to be scared out of your wits…or as Micah would say, your fur.
Hope you’ve enjoyed this review. Now go enjoy the book.
Best wishes and happy reading,
Rita Lorraine
