Did you know…

This is an image of The Martin Hotel, which at one time entertained the top names in Black entertainment.

Guests included Ella Fitzgerald, The Ink Spots, Fats Domino, Mahalia Jackson, Cab Calloway, The Platters, Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Willie Mays, Satchel Paige, and even the Original Harlem Globe Trotters.

Its 50 guestrooms made it the largest Black hotel in the south.

This is a photograph of “Mother” Mary Walker, an ex-slave from Georgia who settled in Chattanooga and learned to read at the ripe old age of 116.

She was twice name Chattanooga’s Ambassador of Good Will, and was declared the oldest student in the nation by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
