Black History Month is upon us, so I’m passing along this wonderful list of books by, for or about African Americans to add to your shopping list.

5. March On!: The Day My Brother Martin Changed The World, by Professor Christine King Farris. 2008. Written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s sister. Click here for my YABOOKSCENTRAL review.
6. Our Children Can Soar: A celebration of Rosa, Barack and the Pioneers of Change, by author and editor Michelle Cook. 2009. Very moving text, and breathtaking paintings. A must-have! Click here for my YABOOKSCENTRAL review.
7. Penelope and The Preposterous Birthday Party, by Sheri Radford. 2009. Very enjoyable. Colorful and funny illustrations, and most notably, the MC’s mother is African American and her father is not…yet the book never addresses this. The story revolves around Penelope, and treats the interracial marriage as an everyday occurrence. I love it! Click here for my YABOOKSCENTRAL review.
8. Sacred Mountain Everest, by Christine Taylor-Butler. Very informative with brilliant photographs. My review will post on YABOOKSCENTRAL on February 13th.
9. Stitchin’ and Pullin’: A Gee’s Bend Quilt, by Newberry and Caldecott Honor Book author Patricia C. McKissack. 2008. Click here for my YABOOKSCENTRAL review.

12. When Louis Armstrong Taught Me To Scat, by Muriel Harris Weinstein. 2008. A young girl dreams Louis Armstrong is teaching her to scat. The format is unique, and the pictures are outstanding. Click here for YABOOKSCENTRAL review.
