Web for Writers 101, Part 5 – How Much Should a Decent Website Cost?
Hi Everybody,
Hope you’ve been enjoying our Website for Writers – 101 series. Today we’re at the point “where the rubber meets the road.” What I mean is, it’s time to talk about money. Just how much does a decent website cost?
Read on to find out!
Part 5 – How Much Should a Decent Website Cost?
Rita: Hi Thomas. Now we’re down to the nitty-gritty. This is probably what everyone wants to know first when they consider getting a website: Just what is a reasonable amount to pay for a basic website?
Thomas: Once again, you’ve asked a good question. Your best bet is to always shop around, compare prices, and get a feel for what’s out there as you consider hiring a professional to complete your web development. Remember, skill and experience should always be at the top of your list. And keep in mind that you get what you pay for (or don’t pay for).
That being said, $400-$500 should get you a pretty good five-page static website, built with basic HTML and CSS. Of course, if your website has CMS / Blog integration, you’re definitely going to pay more.
Rita: Static site? Didn’t you tell us this means a basic website without blog integration?
Thomas: Yes. A static site is cheaper, and may seem like a bargain or “good start,” but believe me, you’ll pay for it down the road. At the least, you will need a basic understanding of HTML and CSS, especially if you’re planning on making any changes and updates yourself. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay someone to make changes each time you need them. My personal recommendation is to go for a site with CMS / Blog integration, like we discussed in the section called “Why is blogging better than a website.”
Rita: Yes, I remember. You said that most blogs come with easy-to-use features, right?
Thomas: That’s right. These features—or as we call it, this easy-to-use interface, allows a more pratical approach to making updates and creating new pages.

Rita: So these features cost more?
Thomas: Right again. Advanced features play a key role in determining the total amount you will spend on your website. For example, someone may quote you a basic price of $500, but features like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), server-side technology and advanced programming, Flash animation, original / stock images, audio / video integration, and original logo designs are only a few of the many factors/features that can and will definitely increase your final price.
Rita: In other words, you get what you pay for…just like you said.
Thomas: There’s no way around it.
