“Chattanooga On The Map” Finds A Publisher!

June 10, 2007

In December 2007, Rita L. Hubbard’s first nonfiction historical, tentatively “Chattanooga On The Map,” will make its debut. The final title will be AFRICAN AMERICANS OF CHATTANOOGA: A HISTORY OF UNSUNG HEROES.

Designed to be the first of a two-volume historical, African Americans of Chattanooga chronicles the early presence of African Americans in the Chattanooga / Hamilton County area. It outlines the contributions African Americans in Chattanooga have made to their own city and to the United States as a whole.

The book will feature exciting biographies, including the story of ex-slave Mary Walker, who became the nation’s oldest student after she learned to read at the ripe old age of 116, and blacksmith William “Uncle Bill” Lewis, the freedman who put the shackles on the Andrew’s Raiders.
